Class Experience

Students will begin the class by introducing themselves, what drew them to fashion and what their main focus or passion is within the Fashion Industry. Though I will teach an entire overview, it will help me to assess and tailor more specific information around their ideal roles & interests of choice.

We will first go over the main “divisions” of the Fashion industry, and their relevant Positions & Roles (through a mix of discussion(s), and a Powerpoint presentation, etc.) —

-Fashion Magazines = Creative Directors, Editors, Journalists, Copywriters, Stylists, Photographers, Graphic Designers, Set Design, Bookers, Production Staff

-Fashion & Design “Houses” = Designers, Illustrators, Seamstresses, Ateliers, Tailors,

-Fashion Marketing & Public Relation Firm(s) = P.R. Executives, Press & Showroom Managers, Social Media Managers

-Retail = Visual & General Merchandising, Buying, In-House “Stylists,” Studio Services, Sales, Corporate/Administrative

-Film/Music = Costume Design, Wardrobe & Styling, Talent Handler

-Freelance = Hair and Make-Up Artists, Creative Consultant(s), Style & Trend Forecasting, etc.

-Modeling Agencies = Department Heads, Agents

We’ll explore the meeting point of what you LOVE to do, what you’re GREAT at doing - and where those happen to intersect! Let’s find out, together!

Learning Goals
After our initial introduction and breakdown in the 1st class, students will then choose 2-3 positions that seem of interest to them during our 2nd class, and we will delve in and learn more specific, detailed information that I will tailor for each student. From -

-What each role is titled, what each position entails, and what upward escalation/trajectory in each role looks like; starting salary, etc.

-Education requirements - what classes students can begin to take, even in middle/high school, that will aid in their chosen profession; all the way up to College, MFA and Certification programs; Internships, etc.

-Top companies in each respected field of choice (Top Magazines, Design Houses, Agencies, Studios, etc.)

-Best “Market” (location) in each respected field of choice
