US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
This class is an ongoing format. Students will sketch a new design every week. Each week is charged as a subscription on Sunday mornings. Students can join or leave the series any week. Prior attendance and knowledge of the subject is not required to attend. Students will learn the tools they need to begin their artistic journey into self-expression, reflection, and creative thinking in the world of fashion illustration. Student will learn the rules and techniques in croquis construction followed by a designer illustration each week. Students will start with anatomy theories and learn how to apply those rules to construct a croquis. Students will use the 9-head construction techniques to develop their croquis templates. We will use geometric shapes such as ovals, cylinders, spheres, rectangles to form various body parts. Having in mind a corresponding geometric shape and then making the adjustments will make drawing parts of the body much easier and more accurate. Students will start with an axis line and then complete all 9 sections with head, neck, shoulders, bust, waist, arms and hands, hip, legs and feet. They will then add some muscles to give a more realistic rounded overall look. Learning the foundation of figure drawing will train students to sketch anatomically correct and well proportioned croquis that gives clothes their shape and shows them in the best light. Students will also learn how to illustrate designer sketches like the runway looks. They will learn how to sketch out and color the designs with step-by-step instructions. We will start with the foundation layer, then add patterns, prints and embellishments. We will then add hair color and skin tone the last. Students will learn how to apply shadows and color blending to draw areas like under the neck, inside parts of the limbs, cast shadow from clothing, etc. to add more dimension. Students will focus on learning the basics of garment detail drawing in terms of textile characteristics, how to illustrate florals and patterns, how to render textures like glitter, shine, leather, and matte finishes, how various types of fabric fold and move differently, and how to apply such knowledge to properly draw the clothed body. Once they built a solid foundation and keep practicing, they will be able to design a multitude of unique designs of their own and dive into variations of the basic runway croquis pose to represent different body types and sizes. Classes are highly interactive and students will have the opportunity to socialize and share their ideas in a fun and upbeat environment. It is a beginner level class for students who would like to be future fashion designers, costume designers or fashion illustrators.
