Class Experience

This is an on-going class focused on challenging students to think creatively like a fashion designer. While creativity can come naturally, it is also important to practice it regularly by training your mind to think outside the box. As a former fashion design student at Parsons, we were always encouraged to push our boundaries and at times it felt more important than learning the technical skills.

What I really love about this class is that it's not only about developing your own creative ideas but to also feel inspired by other students, leaving our session together feeling more motivated or challenged. It's also a great way for students to build their confidence in speaking. They will practice discussing their own work with clarity while providing constructive feedback to their peers. This is a skill that I believe is important to develop from a young age as it'll be required in design school and the workforce. Each week, students will practice developing their own creative thinking process in 3 parts:

Part 1:
Students will be given an inspiration/prompt and together as a class we will brainstorm ideas.

Part 2:
Students will go into individual breakout rooms and sketch out their own design(s) in class. There will be some guidance as I check in with each student on their sketches and help them develop their ideas.

Part 3:
Students will be asked to present their finished drawing, describe their thinking process and ask for critique from the class. Depending on class size, sometimes students will only get to present their initial ideas at the end of class. They will be asked to complete and present their finished design at the beginning of our next class.
Learning Goals
Students will:
- practice thinking critically and creatively
- build up their confidence in designing and speaking
- learn to provide constructive criticism to their peers
