Class Experience
Students will explore and examine the fashion eras of the 20th Century on a decade by decade basis, and will draw on these historical references as inspiration for understanding contemporary design. This course will provide an overview on how varying circumstances, social, political and technological advances affected the previous decades and have influenced the current fashion industry. Students will watch video clips from different eras, engage in discussions about each era, and be given...
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of fashion and the beginnings of the fashion industry during the 20th Century. They will be able to recognize the basic silhouettes of various time periods and apply this knowledge in order to connect historical events and movements that are influential in the current and future fashion trends.
I love teaching the history of fashion as a course in general. My background is in teaching this course at the college level, but it can easily be adapted for younger learners. I approach this class as more of a fun research experience, each decade has new and exciting facts and timelines for what influenced the clothes of each era. My personal experience in fashion design allows me to approach this class uniquely because it's not your typical history class, I teach it in a way that is more engaging yet informative by including little projects throughout the course.
Homework will be small projects including style sheets for each decade, designer of decades research, and a final project presentation.
A syllabus will be handed out on the first day of class. I will also share any additional handouts and homework sheets as the course goes along.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner progress will be assessed by attendance, completion of homework, and presenting the final project.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
