Class Experience

EVERY WEEK: Because this is a flex class, there will be no face to face meetings. The student must post their progress weekly. Student's will ask the instructor at least one question. Example: "What is this sleeve called on my design?" The students will play a game when posting progress: "My ___ has ___. Who has ___?" Examples: "My mood board has a lot of blue. Whose mood board has something purple? / My designs are dresses. Who has designs with pants?" This will encourage the student's interaction level with the instructor and peers.

Starting with WEEK 1, the student will learn to create their own mood board which will help them solidify an idea or a unifying theme for varying pieces in their collection. The students will be taught to consider market segments, fabrics, patterns, colors, and design details.

During WEEK 2, the student will learn how to draw their own simple fashion figure using the 9 segment strategy. By combining simple shapes, the student can create a customized fashion figure. We will discuss proportions, anatomy, and basic drawing techniques. The student will practice drawing different poses so the end portfolio will have different dynamics.

Next with WEEK 3, the student will then draw outfits using their croqui fashion figures by applying features of clothing to portray a mood with garment design. Add color using colored pencils or markers. The student may choose to draw a top and pants/skirt/shorts or a dress.

Finishing with WEEK 4, the student will learn fashion presentation skills while they wrap up any designs and compile their designs together. They will learn vocabulary for their write ups to describe features of design, patterns, and themes. The student can then post their final portfolio to be graded.
