Class Experience

Advanced Level
This class is taught in English.
Students will gain a better understanding of the design process.
Students will create a muslin mock up of a garment.
Students will learn some tailoring techniques.
I have been teaching students from as young as 8 to create fashion items from sketch to a model. It is an absolutely essential skill for fashion designers to understand the entire design process.
Create garment throughout the course of the class.
Students will need:
Paper, pencil, thin black marker, coloring materials.
Students will also need sewing materials. This can include a sewing machine, scissors, pins, thread, ruler, measuring tape.
Butcher paper/newspaper/other thin paper to create a pattern.
1-4 years of muslin fabric (to know exactly how much, contact me with your design)
Other notions; students may need to go to a fabric store to purchase items.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 4+ hours per week outside of class.
Students will need to sew during this class. They can sew by hand or by machine. Only their parent or guardian can know how much supervision they will need.
Garment may not come out perfectly- only time and practice can improve student work!
Students may be pointed to YouTube sources for certain specialized sewing techniques if needed.

Hi! My name is Melissa Quijano (she/her) and I teach classes focused on history and fashion. Whether my classes are focused on the contemporary or the past, I want students to come away with a greater understanding of their culture and themselves....
