Aspiring fashion designer? Stylist? Just really love clothes? This is the class for you. Fashion Design: The Fundamentals will prepare students for further study in fashion design. This class will involve discussion on what fashion is, as well as drawing. Day 1: 8-head figure Learn to draw a female figure to turn into a "croquis"- a body to trace over and over again to draw clothes on. Also learn how to alter the female figure into a male fashion figure, if students are interested....
This September will be my 5th year teaching beginning fashion design at my studio, and I also start our drawing lessons with this unit. Though students may prefer to ultimately download croquis from the internet, I believe it is important to have a foundation in understanding the body before continuing on to draw and design clothes.
Students will need: -8.5x11" paper or larger. Computer paper is fine. -Pencil/eraser/sharpener -Colored pencils -Markers -Ultra fine permanent marker (like Sharpie)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will be dealing with the female form. I also include a discussion on how to be body positive, and how the fashion industry is heading towards more realistic body types. We will discuss why the fashion figure looks like it does. My biggest concern with teaching fashion is dealing with adolescents who are self-conscious, but I believe with the right dialogue they may feel more confident after. Occasionally conversation surrounding gender and sexual identify come up due to the nature of the fashion industry.
