Class Experience
Aspiring fashion designer? Stylist? Just really love clothes? This is the class for you. Fashion Design 101 will prepare students for further study in fashion design. This class will involve discussion on what fashion is, as well as drawing. Each week I will post videos for students to follow along to and students will post pictures of their finished designs as well as comment on one another's looks. Week 1: Female Figure + Fashion Learn to draw a female croquis- a fashion figure that you can use over and over again! Then design an outfit to share with us on the classroom. We'll be naming our clothes- so contribute what you know! Students can post videos explaining all of the aspects of the look they create and other students and teacher will respond Week 2: Male Figure + Fashion Learn to draw a male croquis and design an outfit for him. We'll be naming our clothes again, so post your design to the classroom and try your hand at naming one another's outfits! Students can post videos explaining all of the aspects of the look they create and other students and teacher will respond Week 3: Rendering Clothes Rendering is a super important fashion skill- so we're going to master three techniques: ruffles, plaid, and lace. We'll also look at different types of hair. How will you style your figure? Post a picture or video of your finished looks in the classroom and we'll discuss the mood and personality of our looks! Every student should comment on every other student's piece with feedback or suggestions? Week 4: Movement It's time to make our bodies move! I'll show you the rules and techniques to making our bodies move, and we'll talk about why too. Post a picture of yourself posing to the classroom so we have an extra challenge of drawing from life! From here you'll make a few more croquis to add to your collection. Choose your favorite pose and design an outfit- show us in a video or picture and tell us about it. All students should give feedback or suggestions to other student's work. These croquis can be used over and over again in future fashion design classes with me. After you have completed Fashion 101, check out other 100-level offerings, or dive into Fashion 200! Want more fashion NOW? Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Education from CUNY College of Staten Island
Bachelor's Degree in English from CUNY Brooklyn College
This September will be my 5th year teaching beginning fashion design at my studio, and I also start our drawing lessons with this unit. Though students may prefer to ultimately download croquis from the internet, I believe it is important to have a foundation in understanding the body before continuing on to draw and design clothes.
