Fashion, Accessories and Makeup of the Ancient World: Let's Draw and Learn!
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Are you interested in fashion? Do you like being creative while you learn? This is the history class for you! Each class is completely standalone. Learners can drop in and out, based on their interests, over the course of 16 weeks. After that period, the class will be rescheduled and begin again with Topic 1 again. In the first 30-40 minutes, students will be introduced to the ancient civilization of the week. Then, we will discuss ancient fashion, accessories and makeup styles, based...
Students will learn about a number of ancient civilizations and their fashion/makeup, and practice their fine motor skills (coloring) while looking at fashion design. They will also learn how to look for clues and information in the archaeological record . I strongly encourage questions and positive discussion with their peers
I am a trained archaeologist, and I excavated at sites such as Mytilene and Kommos in Greece for many field seasons. I have travelled extensively through Europe, and I have taught Greek and Roman art, archaeology and mythology at Concordia University, Montréal. I held a position at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, where I created and led tours for children on the topics of Greek, Roman and Egyptian archaeology, the Medieval period, dinosaurs and natural history. More recently, I have taught labs on water science and solar energy to Kindergarten and Grade 1 students through Scientists in School. Since July 2021, I have had the pleasure of teaching many archaeology and ancient civilizations classes on Outschool.
Learners will require the use of: 1. Colored pencils/crayons/markers/etc., blank white paper, and a comfortable place to draw.
Time spent on the discussion of clothing, accessories and makeup may vary from class to class depending on the archaeological evidence and information available. Students do not need to access any third-party sources and all class are standalone. Learners can drop in and out, based on their interests, over the course of 16 weeks. After that period, the class will be rescheduled and begin again with Topic 1.
I will present the class material through the use of visuals, both from my own private collection and from archaeological excavations and museum collections. I use PowerPoint presentations for my lessons. The students will look at the archaeological material and learn how to interpret it, and discover clues that tell us about fashion, accessories and makeup. I strongly believe that all evidence must be investigated and viewed equally, and I do reinforce this important concept every week. The topic discusses fashion, accessories and makeup in antiquity, and the concept is based on the book by Jane Bingham entitled "A History of Fashion and Costume, Volume 1: The Ancient World". As an archaeologist, I base my classes on scholarly texts, scientific secondary sources such as textbooks, scholarly journals (Archaeology Magazine, National Geographic, Antiquity periodicals, Penn University publications, etc.), and archaeological reports, while keeping it age appropriate. I also use primary sources, for example Homer, English translations of Egyptian hieroglyphs, Latin texts, etc. Other visuals than my own are drawn from sites such as Open Licensed Images, Ancient World Image Bank, World History Encyclopedia, the New York Public Library Digital Collection, Unsplash and Public Domain Pictures. All sites allow for free use of images, with credits. Learners do not need to access any third-party sites during class.
