Fables have been told for over 2,000 years. It's no wonder they were one of the first exercises in the classical 'middle school' education syllabus known as the 'progymnasmata'. The genre is great for learning to see, appreciate and argue both sides of an issue; for learning how to create vivid descriptions; for getting to grips with character and motivation (and thus understanding a bit better what moves us to do things or not do them); and for developing communication and storytelling...
As a result of attending this course, students will improve their descriptive writing skills, appreciate the link between text and illustration in literary works more, increase their knowledge and understanding of the natural world through engaging with exercises based on times of day and describing the traits of characters they choose, deepen their understanding of psychology and motivation, and improve their written communication skills.
Throughout the course, students will be asked to complete tasks contributing to elements that will be combined at the end to form a finished fable. See class description for details of the classwork and assignments involved.
Students will need a standard stationery kit (writing implements, ruler, paper, eraser), access to a scanner or digital camera if submitting handwritten / illustrated work. An over-ear gaming-type set of headphones with built-in microphone and a noise-cancelling feature is recommended for best audio quality for communication in classes.
No formal assessment is provided, but individual positive constructive feedback is given throughout the course.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be asked to research fables on line.
