Lay out the pattern palette and learn a pattern a pattern called Tipple.

Optional: Colorless Blenders
Discusses what a colorless blender is and how to use it. You can skip this lesson if you are not using one.

Learn the Zentangle Method and how art can help with relaxation and focus.

Getting Ready to Finish Your Piece

Adding Color & Graphite
Build on the skills learned with the individual patterns. Use color to add depth and dimension to the overall design. Optionally, learn how to use gray to create shadows without making the composition muddy.

Black & White Design
If you prefer to not add color to your piece, this video demonstrates different ways to shade the elements with a sketch pencil.
Lesson 16
Wrap Up
Students will learn:
*The Zentangle Method® and five nature-themed patterns
*Black & White Shading, using a graphite pencil and blender, to create highlights, lowlights, shadows, roundness, and depth
*Colored pencil techniques including, creating highlights, lowlights, shadows, roundness, and depth
*Weaving together patterns (tangling) to create a cohesive composition
I am a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT).  I am trained in the Zentangle Method® and the best practices for teaching the art form. I decided to pursue the certification after several years of working with Zentangle patterns in my own art pieces. I regularly create designs in both black & white and color. I particularly enjoy using colored pencils, watercolors, and chalk pastels in my creations.
Homework Offered
Each lesson will contain a hands-on component for students to complete. Students are not required to post their final art pieces, but it will be strongly encouraged.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students have the option to post their pattern palettes and art work in the classroom for evaluation. Please note that I will not evaluate how closely they stuck to the patterns. Zentangle patterns are abstract and part of the Zentangle Method states, "there are no mistakes in Zentangle." I will, however, assess their colored pencil and shading techniques and provide feedback and pointers to help them refine their abilities.
Grades Offered
Students should have: 
   *High quality colored pencils, such as Prismacolor, including a white pencil  
   *White mix media paper (minimum 98lb/160g)
   *A black fine tipped ink pen (such as a .01 or .02 Micron)
   *A soft sketch pencil (2B or HB)
   *An eraser, preferably sand eraser for colored pencils and ink
   *A blending stump or tortillon 
   *Optional - Colorless blender pencil
