Students are keenly aware of their peer's reactions to their work. They know when everyone is listening breathlessly. They know when everyone is excited about their writing. This kind of positive reinforcement of strong writing will encourage students to write at a more challenging level.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Advanced Level
This is an online class geared towards learners who love fantasy and the holidays. In every workshop class we'll start with an exercise or a holiday inspiration, then move on to brainstorming exercises that will help kids dive into writing. After brainstorming, students will write fiction for twenty minutes. At the end of class, students will read their writing out loud if they want to. Everyone in the workshop will say what they like about the story and/or recall details they remember about the writing. For each class we'll be exploring a unique holiday theme about a secret world of enchantment. The class is so much fun! Students will practice developing world building, characters, themes, and stories at lightning speed as our adventures build. Many children have so much fun they are eager to keep writing--even after the workshop is over. Note: this class fulfills Common Core Learning standards for 5th, 6th, and 7th grade. This class fulfills the narrative/creative writing standards for California 5th, 6th, and 7th graders.

• Giving articulate, respectful, and helpful feedback to their peers
• Developing focus and concentration on a task
• Letting their creative ideas flourish
• Exciting collaborative engagement with other students
• Learning elements of novel plot structure
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some of the stories used in exercises are old fairy tales which can sometimes be a bit gruesome. I will warn students ahead of time.
Supply List
Students should have access to writing paper and pen for each workshop class. We want to put our inner critic away--it's too easy to erase words on the computer. Tip: have a folder on hand so you can put stories from the workshop together at the end of each day.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Outschool is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., owner of the Harry Potter® mark and related Harry Potter marks.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I've taught writing workshops for children and teens since 1992. This type of workshop format is tried and true. It allows students a bit of guidance, if they need it, but gives them a maximal creative freedom--the perfect blend for imaginative kids. I consistently see student's writing improve over the course of the workshop, as well as their ability to focus.
In this workshop learners are motivated with all the freedom they have to work and create exciting stories. When writing time is fun time--as it is in this class--grammar problems shake out of sentences until the learner is writing fluid paragraphs they can read with confidence to others.
