1 hour per week. Learners will be assigned the sections of the book to read to be prepared for the course. Either the learner can read it themselves or have the chapters read to them. There will be a culminating project at the the last class that the learner will work on throughout the course. Readings should take about 30 minutes a week. Learners will be assigned specific chapters and deadlines to have it read by.Assessment
Informal assessments of the learner will done via the discussion and the final project.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 4
In this course the learner will learn a variety of reading comprehension skills such as plot, theme, point of view, imagery, context clues, predictions, figurative language, character traits, etc. Each week the learner will be given vocabulary to increase their skills. The class will meet twice a week with one day focusing on the skills and the other day focusing on the comprehension of the book. The book study will be structured in the following ways: Week 1: Chapters 1 - 3 -Vocabulary Words -Focus Skill: Characters, Making Predictions -Simile Week 2: Chapters 4 - 7 -Vocabulary Words -Focus Skill: Exploring the Conflict, Character Traits -Onomatopoeia Week 3: Chapters 8 -11 -Vocabulary Words -Focus Skill: Setting, Predictions, Point of View Week 4: Chapters 12- 15 -Vocabulary Words -Focus Skill: Summarizing, Descriptive Language Week 5: Chapters 16 -18 -Vocabulary Words -Focus Skill: Plot, Mood, Theme Week 6: Culminating Project Each week, the two day session will be broken down by: Day 1 of the Week: -Vocabulary Skills -Focus Skill(s) -Practice of the Skill(s) Day 2 of the Week: -Discussion of the Chapters -Mini comprehension test -Book related activity The class will be structured to allow the learners to interact and share ideas with each other during discussion and activities. My teaching style is to engage the learner in conversation and hands-on activities. There will be a culminating project due on the last day of the course. All readings will happen outside of the live sessions. No previous experience is needed for this course.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of the text and be able to answer higher order thinking and comprehension questions. Students will apply their knowledge of various comprehension skills through activities and readings.
