Class Experience

Fantastic Mr Fox offers a wonderful insight into Roald Dahl's use of alliteration and language. In this course we have a lot of fun with arts and crafts. We will create characters, stories and settings.

This course is appropriate for students who have already read and enjoyed Fantastic Mr. Fox or students who are picking it up for the first time.

Each week I will upload 2-3 short videos on Sunday. The first 1 or 2 videos will have a short assignment, such as answering discussion questions or drawing a quick sketch. The last video will have a description of the activity for the week. Most activities will be writing assignments or art activities, which learners should complete and attach before Saturday of the week. Completed assignments can be photographed and uploaded to the chat or uploaded directly.

Lesson 1- Setting the scene
We will read Roald Dahl's setting description and draw what we image the scene to look like. After all the learners have uploaded their drawings we'll be able to compare and contrast to see what is the same and what is different. For homework learners will create a setting for their story.

Lesson 2- Emotional art
Learners will learn to use adjectives and "pizazz" to make boring sentence exciting. We will also look at how colors represent emotions and create our own art piece with colors. Each learner will choose an emotion and create a piece of art depicting that emotion. We will try to guess what emotion is portrayed in each other's masterpieces.

Lesson 3- Learning to dig
Learners will discuss problem solving. They will create their own machine to help the farmers catch Mr. Fox. We will look at the different solutions that our classmates have come up with and decide together which machine we should use.

Lesson 4- Dilemmas
Learners will discuss dilemmas and work on their power of persuasion. Learners will need to convince each other to share something or do something according to the dilemma cards. We will take turns writing up our most convincing arguments, and then each learner will decide if they have been convinced or not. For homework learners will create their own board games, that they can play with their friends and family.

Lesson 5- Creating characters
Looking at Roald Dahl's character descriptions we will learn about anthropomorphism. Learners will create their own animal characters. They will make a mask for their character.

Lesson 6- Play it out
We will look at the dialogue at the end of the book and turn to book into a play. Learners will use the animal characters that they created last class and write a play about what happens after the end of the book. Learners will need to work together in pairs or small groups and use all the characters in their group in the play.

Learning Goals

Students will learn critical thinking and improve literature and art skills.
