This is an introductory/review course where learners will explore the terminology and life cycle of mushrooms. We'll cover the following terminology and topics of mushroom growth: • How hymenium tissue of different species release billions of spores that germinate into 1st generation hyphae and under the right conditions fuse into the 2nd generation form. • We will cover how fungi release enzymes into a substrate to feed and grow, and • the fusion haploid cells and division of cells in the basidium. Course material will use a combination of lecture and Google slides to teach the material with opportunities for all students to interact and share questions. No prior experience or knowledge is required, just an interest in learning about mushrooms!
Learning Goals
Students will explore the life cycle of fungi from spore to mycelium, to mushroom growth, and back to spore release.
