In this one week course, students will create a different frozen treat each day. . In this course we will be preparing, Ice Cream in a Bag, Smoothies 2 Ways, "Ice Cream" Sandwiches, and Chocolate Bananas. Each class will begin with a short introduction of all the learners. We will then review the recipe, go over materials and ingredients, then dive into the recipe. Each class will be a hands on demonstration, with a live example as we go. Goal will be for each student to create a frozen treat to share with their family. We will discuss science, measurements, following a recipe, and working in a clean and efficient way.
First Class Meeting Materials and Ingredients: Ice Cream in a Bag + Favorite Mix Ins! 1 quart sized zip top bag 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons sugar 6 tablespoons kosher or rock salt Any flavoring(s) of your choice: Such as chocolate syrup, sprinkles, chopped strawberries, brownie pieces, or crushed cookies (optional) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 gallon-sized zip top bags Ice 1 tablespoon measuring spoon 1 liquid measuring cup Optional**winter gloves or pot holders to protect hands from cold Second Class Meeting Materials and Ingredients: Smoothie Popsicles 2 cups frozen mixed berries 1 cup milk of your choice 1 ripe banana 2 Tablespoons Honey 1 lime Smoothie Bowls 2 cups frozen strawberries 1 cup milk 1 ripe banana 1 Tablespoon Honey Various Toppings to top your smoothie bowls: kiwi, shredded coconut, mandarin oranges, blueberries, chia seeds, peanut butter, granola/cereal, etc Popsicle molds with sticks or small plastic cups and popsicle sticks (will need aluminum foil if using cups and popsicle sticks) Microplane for zesting Blender Rubber Spatula 1 tablespoon measuring spoon 1 liquid measuring cup Third Class Meeting Materials and Ingredients: "Ice Cream" Sandwiches 1 3.4 oz package of favorite flavor of instant pudding 1 cup COLD milk 1.5 cups thawed cool whip 16 cinnamon graham crackers or pizzelle cookies 1 medium sized bowl 1 liquid measuring cup 1 whisk 1 rubber spatula 1 spoon or ice cream scoop Rimmed cookie sheet or platter for freezing Fourth Meeting Materials and Ingredients: Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas 4 bananas Chocolate Almond Bark Popsicle Sticks Favorite Toppings--Such as peanut butter chips, mini chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, cereal, shredded coconut, chopped pistachios, heath bar pieces, melted peanut butter, etc 1 small microwave safe bowl 1 butter knife 1 wax paper lined cookie sheet Spoons and bowls for your toppings Microwave access required
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
2 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Some parental guidance may be needed depending on your child's skill level and comfort in the kitchen. We will be using a microwave and a blender, and also a small knife in this course.
On a mission to prove kids can cook, and that it's ok to get messy, try hard, and have fun!
