OVERVIEW: In this one week class, students will learn new and engaging ways to practice and expand their understanding of fractions. They will develop a basic understanding for fractions including; identifying fractions, representing fractions using models, representing whole numbers as fractions, comparing the size of fractions, and finding equivalent fractions. This class is part of a series of courses offered in the same structure and format to address specific math goals. I currently offer Amazing Addition, Super Subtraction, Mastering Multiplication, Decoding Division and Fantastic Fractions. Each class meets 5 times over the course of 1 week for 25 minute long sessions. NOTE: This class will focus on primarily Grade 3 Math Standards. This class will cover introductory fractions topics. Students will learn how to identify, represent and compare fractions. We will not be covering adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing with fractions in this camp. TOPICS & SCHEDULE OF LEARNING: DAY ONE: Introduction to Fractions (Define Fractions, Recognizing/Identifying Fractions) DAY TWO: Represent a Fraction using a Fraction Model (Area Models, Number Lines, Linear Fraction Bars, Sets) DAY THREE: Represent a Whole Number using Fractions, Fractions in Our Daily Lives DAY FOUR: Comparing and Ordering the Size of Fractions (two or more with either like numerators or like denominators) DAY FIVE: Finding Equivalent Fractions, Weekly Review CLASS FORMAT: 1. Introductions and Warm Up 2. Review of Learning and Vocabulary (Days 2-5) 3. Introduction of New Content/Instruction 4. Independent Practice with Teacher Feedback 5. Demonstration of Learning: Collaborative Discussion, Strategy Sharing 6. (If time allows) Successes and Struggles Reflection INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: My classes prioritize student engagement. We will use a wide variety of learning tools during our classes including; slides/visual aids, concrete models, videos, songs, games and more. I ask all students have a paper/pencil or whiteboard accessible to them to ensure they can practice along the way and have an opportunity for hands-on learning. THIS CLASS IS GREAT FOR... - a student wishing to REVIEW & PRACTICE Grade 3/Introductory Fraction Skills - a student wishing to PREVIEW & LEARN Grade 3/Introductory Fraction Skills While this class will focus on Grade 3 learning standards, this class is NOT limited to Grade 3 students. Students do not need any background knowledge about fractions in order to succeed in this class. This class will serve as the perfect blend of a REVIEW or PREVIEW depending on your student's age and math experience.
