Description
Class Experience
I'd like the students to be able to formulate a creative idea from a prompt and develop it into something presentable, whether a page in their world book, a poem for an online magazine or for credit in school. This class is about producing original work.
I have been writing and teaching professionally for almost 30 years. For the past 18 years, I have specifically been teaching world building in a variety of settings (school residencies, kids camps, conferences), including on Outschool. I am currently working on the 6th book in a children's fantasy adventure set in a completely imaginary world. Conjuring imaginative ideas forth is my great joy in life.
What students do with their work is up to them. I recommend spending an hour or two editing the piece they write in class. If they want to share it with me, I'd definitely like to see a finished product. (typed is definitely easier for my eyes)
Something to write with and something to write in and on! I encourage drafts in pen/pencil rather than straight into a computer. A creative writing JOURNAL is a bonus (great way to keep exercises in one place)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
If interested, students have an opportunity to send one piece per week for informal feedback.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
I do my best to keep students away from violence and graphic imagery, however this is a creative writing class on the fantastic, so I never know what they will share.
I use pinterest pages to keep track of images I use for prompts: https://www.pinterest.ca/scriptcreative/evocation/fantastic/ https://www.pinterest.ca/scriptcreative/fantastic-landscapes/ https://www.pinterest.ca/scriptcreative/ancientsacredabandoned-inspiration/
