US Grade 5 - 7
Do you have a cat in the house? Have your children ever wondered or asked where cats come from? Are they interested in learning about the biology of cats? If so, this is the place to be! In this class, we will learn about the history of house cat domestication. We will discuss the evolution from wild cats to domestic cats, why and how these changes occurred, and how different cat breeds are bred and controlled by people. We will also explore a variety of interesting adaptations that house cats retain from their wild days, including both structural (physical) adaptations, and behaviours and instincts. This class is a combination lecture-style and discussion-style class. Students will receive a handout to follow along with the class and document their learning. They are more than welcome to bring their furry friends to class if they want to! No prior knowledge is required, but an interest in cats is of course welcome :)
Learning Goals
Students will understand how cats became domesticated, and how cat breeds are created and maintained. They will also be able to explain some adaptations that house cats have, and how these adaptations were useful to wild cats/are useful to house cats today.

Hello everyone! My name is Annette and I'm a teacher originally from Toronto, Canada, but currently located in Nicaragua.
I have both passion AND experience teaching a wide variety of science topics. I developed an intense interest in geological and biological sciences from a very young age, and earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biology) and a Bachelor of Education, both from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have two years' in-school experience teaching Geography, Biology, and General Science for grades 7-13 in Canada and England, and three years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language online. However, I've been working with children in a variety of other settings for over 13 years! Here on Outschool, I offer a range of science classes and courses for approximately 10-16 year olds. I am also queer and I'm VERY passionate about providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming class environment for all of my students. My classroom is a place for all who need a safe space to learn.
