Fantastic Beasts & How to Create Them
What's included
2 live meetings
1 hrs 50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will improve their creative writing, art, and executive planning skills by inventing a new and magical creature. We'll begin with short introductions talking about our favorite mythical and fictional series so that collaboration is at the forefront of learner's minds and the class keeps a social atmosphere! Then, we'll use various strategies and mapping techniques, such as brainstorming clouds and mind maps, that help us plan our creature in five categories: -Physical characteristics (what do they look like?) -Behavior (what do they eat and how do they act?) -Special abilities (healing, etc.) -Location (where do they live?) -Its story (how did it come to be?) We'll meet in our virtual classroom each week and discuss/work on our creation in-between classes via the classroom. Week 1: we will cover brainstorming and work on developing our creature's behavior, special abilities, location, and the beginning of its story. Week 2: we will cover organizational charts and complete our creation by describing its physical attributes where learners will be encouraged to sketch it while we finish its story. Learners will be encouraged to write as many stories as they'd like and share their finished draft to put in their very own anthology of fantastic beasts and magical creatures! Topics covered: Mind maps/brainstorming/organizational charts Creative writing Collaborative writing Presenting our work

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Heather, founder of Grow Family Wellness, LLC and I love teaching unique classes that fit right alongside the ones you are already doing-kind of like the last puzzle piece. My favorite subjects to explore with you are movement/yoga, mindfulness, social/cultural studies, science, and language arts. I really enjoy making these classes different too by creating projects that are hands-on. Most importantly, I love moving and becoming more mindful of our learning through movement and self-awareness techniques. Believe it or not, yoga is integrated into all that I do and how I teach. And you know what I have noticed? Kids (and adults) love this approach!
I have a Master's in Education, a Bachelor's in English Literature, and multiple yoga and mindfulness credentials from Kidding Around Yoga (I am actually a trainer for them!), Accessible Yoga, and Mindful Schools.
I believe learning should be self-led, self-actualized, and intrinsic and I know that they way to do that is by making class experiences that are fun, relevant, playful, and project-based. It may seem difficult to do that virtually, but there are a multitude of ways to help students gain an exploratory nature at home so that they can get creative with how they approach school! Let's make learning mindful, meaningful, and fun.
My favorite things to do are to walk the beach with my own six children whom I homeschool, create anything (crochet, paint, write), and travel!
