Fantastic Backgrounds: Create a Character and Illustrate a Story! (SUMMER CAMP)
Class experience
In this class, we'll design an original character and create fantastic, three-dimensional background scenes for them to have adventures in! This is a great class for students who love to illustrate stories, create characters (who need some context), or practice visual storytelling. For those interested in cross-curricular lessons, our drawings can also be used for writing prompts! Class syllabus: Lesson 1: Design a character. Decide (by vote) on an image set (listed below). ***We'll...
This class is taught in English.
Students will be introduced to basic character design and human proportions (and exaggeration). We will practice using the rules of perspective (such as overlapping, diminishing size, high/low placement, and detail) to create realistic landscapes and background scenes. Students are encouraged to create a story to go along with their illustrations.
I've been teaching students to draw realistically for almost twenty years! My goal is to give my students a good foundation of techniques that they'll feel comfortable using on their own-- especially when it comes to applying their own creativity to their work. I always ask myself what I would have wanted from an art class when I was a kid, and use that to inspire my class offerings. This class is definitely inspired by my love of fantasy, and my desire to create encompassing visual worlds for the characters I loved.
You will definitely need: - Paper - Pencil - Eraser ** Or you may choose to draw on a tablet! Additional supplies are optional, but encouraged! - Markers - Colored pencils - Watercolor paints - Ink ** Media that allow for more precision are recommended. Materials such as oil pastel or acrylic will not be as well-suited to our purpose. Feel free to message me with any questions!
