What is an illuminated letter? -In medieval times "illuminating" meant to decorate with colors. -An illuminated initial is an enlarged and decorated capital letter and is often the first letter of a section of text in medieval manuscripts. They vary from the simple pen-and-ink drawn letter to the most elaborate letter painted with colors and gold or silver leaf. -Text and illumination complemented each other in medieval manuscripts and were related or sharply contrasted. Students will learn about the history of European medieval illuminated letters and manuscripts. Students will reflect on some of their personal favorite things that they can include in a modern illuminated letter of an initial in their name. **If your student needs accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure they have the best possible class experience.***
Judy has a master's degree in Integrating Arts Into The Curriculum and taught students in public schools for over thirty years. She has spent a considerable amount of time in sixteen countries in Europe which piqued her interest and led to research about medieval illuminated manuscripts. She will share her knowledge and research plus pictures she's taken of illuminated letters and manuscripts in European museums.
