Class Experience

Does your learner have a favorite book series, tv show, or movie that they like to go back and revisit? All characters (literary or otherwise!) have stories left to tell.

One way to capture the interest of a reluctant writer is through high interest subject matter. By allowing learners to write a story about their favorite characters I can capture their attention. All young authors can tap into their creativity by thinking about what story they would like to read about their favorite characters.

This class was developed with the Common Core ELA Standards for 2nd-4th Grade in mind by an experienced teacher with nearly a decade working with this age group. This class was designed with a Balanced Literacy Approach that follows a gradual release of responsibility. The teacher first models the type of writing that they learners will complete. Then the students will brainstorm together and share writing ideas. Next, we will plan our writing together with the use of a graphic organizer. Finally, the students will have the opportunity to write their short stories while the teacher guides and assists them. Learners are invited to share their writing at the end of the class session.

As this is a 30 minute class, if a learner does not have enough time to finish writing their short story they are welcome to finish outside of class and submit it to receive teacher feedback or post it in the classroom for the other learners to see.

Disclaimer:
Please note that although students will be able to choose the characters that they wish to write about they will not be able to write about any violent topics, weapons, etc. The teacher will guide them towards engaging their characters in a different, nonviolent manner should such topics arise.
