Our class focuses on identifying and mastering false cognates between Spanish and English, helping students avoid common pitfalls and expand their vocabulary.

Intermediate Level
  • Identification of False Cognates: Students will be able to recognize and identify false cognates by distinguishing them from true cognates based on meaning and usage.
  • Correct Usage of False Cognates: They will learn how to use these words correctly in various contexts, avoiding common translation mistakes that arise from false cognates.
  • Contextual Understanding: Students will develop the ability to understand and interpret false cognates within different contexts, ensuring they grasp the intended meaning in both written and spoken Spanish.
  • Enhanced Vocabulary: Through targeted exercises and practice, students will expand their Spanish vocabulary by learning alternative words and expressions that accurately convey their intended meaning.
  • Practical Application: They will apply their knowledge through role-playing and interactive scenarios, demonstrating their ability to use false cognates correctly in real-life conversations and writing tasks.
Teacher was a Spanish major in college and gained fluency through study abroad, and living and traveling abroad throughout Latin America for 5+ years.

Details: Students will receive a worksheet at the end of the class to further practice their newly learned Spanish skills

Details:
Students should have some kind of prior knowledge or fluency of the Spanish language
No extra supplies are required, but students will likely want to have a paper or notebook and writing utensil for taking notes.
There may be a couple "false friends" that have a meaning either in Spanish or English that might be slightly suggestive, but nothing beyond a PG level.
