Class Experience

This class is about writing a fun fall-themed story using elements that are randomly chosen (or not randomly chosen for those less adventurous/creative!).
Please note -- Students should already have a firm understanding of writing a complete sentence before taking this class.

After a brief introduction to the writing process, we will talk about what makes a great story (characters, setting, events, problem, solution). Then, we will walk through the writing process together to complete a fall story.

There will be different sets of story elements for character, setting, and problem to chose from.
(one non-fall example: a squirrel, in the park, scared by a thunder/lightening storm)

Once the elements have been decided, we will look at narrative hooks (great ways to begin a story) and some different ways to end a narrative.

Then, students will be ready to write their own story using their hook, story elements, and ending.
I will assist students in filling in the missing details of their story and solving their problem as needed while everyone works.
As time allows, we will talk about editing and revising our stories using CUPS (capitalization, understanding, punctuation, and spelling) and share our stories as students feel comfortable.

A pre-writing page will be loaded into the classroom the day before class -- it is helpful for working in class, but I can also show students how to make a similar page from regular notebook paper if printing is not an option.
(I have some students that work better typing in a Word or Google doc and that is ok too)
After class, some fun fall-themed final copy paper will be sent out for "publishing" the student's final copy for keeping.
Learning Goals
Students will write their own fall themed story using given story elements.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I will not use spooky, Halloween themed elements (no ghosts, witches, trick or treating, blood/guts etc); however, students are free to incorporate such items into their stories if desired. Discussion of these items will be kept to a minimum/focused to our story writing as appropriate.
Supply List
A pre-writing page will be loaded into the classroom the day before class -- otherwise paper and pencil are all that is needed!

After class, some fun fall-themed final copy paper will be sent out for "publishing" the student's final copy for keeping.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
