Fall Semester: Learn to Nature Journal (Ages 7-10)

In this 16 week class, students will be taught curiosity, wonder, and attention through learning the skills of nature journaling! Using "How to Teach Nature Journaling" by John Muir Laws and Emilie Lygren (with permission granted by the authors), students will be given a new project each week that will help them obtain the skills needed to create nature journals with confidence. Learners do not have to be skilled artists or have a vast knowledge of the outdoors to create amazing journals. ...
The goal for all of my learners is to grow in their love of the good, true, and beautiful. As they slow down, take time to observe the world in which they live, and truly study it, they will begin to see how intricately and beautifully it is designed. I do not expect them to become great artists, rather, I want them to grow in confidence. I want them to be able to take what they see in creation and express it on paper in a way that seals it in their memory. My hope is that these pages will serve as a diving board to more exploration, research, and learning as they grow in their curiosity of how nature is knit together.
Each week, students will be given a project or an assignment to complete in their nature journals. They will be asked to choose a day throughout the week in which they can take their journal, pencils, and markers out into nature to work through the project they have been assigned. You may choose to take them hiking or simply allow them to venture into their own backyard. They will present their journaling at the next class and talk about what they learned and how they grew in their knowledge of the natural world.
Students will need a journal and pencils. For the journal, choose any notebook that appeals to your student. It will need to have blank pages (no lines) and the paper will need to be thick enough that markers or watercolor paint do not bleed through. I personally love Canson Mixed Media notebooks that are 7x10 in size. I like that they are spiral bound, have nice, thick pages, and are just the right size to fit in my hiking backpack. They can be found at Walmart or on Amazon. Crayons, colored pencils, and watercolor palettes are all optional mediums that the student can use to enhance their drawings, if they so desire. However, starting simple with just pencil and journal is wise so as not to overwhelm your learner. Your student may also want to have a white board or some scrap paper for class to practice some of the concepts that we go over in class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This class is based off of "How to Teach Nature Journaling: Curiosity, Wonder, Attention" by John Muir Laws and Emilie Lygren. Permission was graciously granted by the authors to use this book for this class. For more in-depth study, students can purchase more books by John Muir Laws, which can be found on Amazon.
