Class Experience

This is a great course for those who want to start learning hand-lettering with a simple design. Together, we will create a beautiful sign using hand-lettered script writing to welcome the season. Having a basic understanding of cursive is a plus, but is not a must for this class. The focal point for this art-piece is the "hello fall" script writing, where we will focus on consistency and balance. Next, we will create a fall-inspired leaf frame to showcase our hand-lettering with alternating fall colors. Last, we will add a small pumpkin with some highlights and foliage as our final touch.

With hand-lettered script writing, creating the correct stroke and width is important. We will learn about having consistency when drawing letters as well as learning how to effectively add elements to create a balanced and complete art piece.

***Please note, some students may not have time to finish coloring their art in class depending on their optimal drawing speed. I will work at a steady pace and frequently gage where students are at during the lesson. It is my goal to help them finish their drawing, but sometimes this doesn’t allow for coloring completion before class is over. Thank you for understanding.***

Learning Goals

Our goals for this lesson are learning basic principles of hand-lettering as it pertains to script writing. This includes consistency when drawing letters to create a fluid look to our artwork. We will also discuss adding complimentary elements to create a balanced and complete art-piece. Some color theory is also included in this lesson.

I am a former Art Teacher and had the privilege of teaching art for 2 years to K-8th grade students using various mediums and forms. A lot of my class instruction was teaching the art of drawing. Weekly, we drew various compositions ranging from seasonal landscapes, wild animals, nature, and portraits. Students enjoyed learning skills to create realistic drawings while adding as much flare and creative variation as they liked. Watching students enjoy making art and grow in their own confidence was truly a priceless gift. In addition to teaching art, I am an artist and have an art studio in my home. I've used my love for hand-lettering and design to start a business in 2015 selling products with my work. It's been so fun!
