5 in-class hoursClass Experience
In this dance for film workshop for teenagers, students will learn how to produce their own dance film using just a smartphone or video camera. I will cover different steps and strategies for preparing, planning, creating, and editing a dance film. Students will use their own choreographic material (we will discuss the options of having something set or improvising the movement), will get to choose the location they film and dance in, and have complete creative control when it comes to editing and creating their products. This course will be broken down into five meetings (listed below), with each meeting focusing on a different aspect of dance for film. Students will have the chance to learn about the film technique or aspect, record and present short clips, and then participate in a discussion with me and their classmates. The first three classes will be focused on filming strategies, and the last two will be more focused on editing. Students will have a short, 1-3 minute film at the culmination of this course, combining what they have produced in the previous weeks. The basic structure of class will be composed of lecture, examples, viewings, and discussion, with the filming portion taking place outside of class. I will cover the topic in class, and the students will be expected to come to the next meeting with a short (30-60 second) clip to present. Dance for film is constantly an experimentation, and I am most interested in students exploring with this element and accessing their creativity, facilitating discussion, and helping them throughout this exciting process. Week 1 - Location and Site-Specific Dance Week 2 - Narrowing your Focus: Audience as your Lens Week 3 - Repetition and Stillness: Creating Structure and Rhythm Week 4 - Editing: Process and Techniques Week 5 - Film Fest: Showings and Filmmaker Discussion No previous dance for film experience is necessary, but basic knowledge of how to operate iMovie or a similar program is preferred, as well as some dance training/experience, and most of all an open, creative, and curious mind! This class is open to any young artist who wants to explore dance in the medium of film, and is inclusive of all genders, abilities, and backgrounds. My teaching style is structured, warm, patient, passionate, and focused. My classes are inclusive, meaning that students of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome and diversity is valued and encouraged. Please feel free to reach out with questions, a different requested time, or if your learner needs any accommodations. I'm happy to work together to find a solution and ensure they get the most out of this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Maxine, and I am a professional dancer, dance educator, and choreographer. I love teaching dance to children of all ages, and finding creative methods to learning. I believe in the healing and uplifting power of movement, using dance as a form of communication and connection, and in the necessity of an arts education. I am committed to helping that be a reality for as many students as possible. Throughout my work as an educator, I have come to understand and value using a student-centered approach, improvising if the needs of my students are different than anticipated and respecting their individuality and learning styles.
I have extensive experience in classical ballet, and have trained since age 4. I have also trained thoroughly in contemporary and modern techniques, including Contemporary Ballet, Horton, Limón, Improvisation, and Release Technique, and obtained my BFA degree in Dance from Dominican University of California. I have been teaching for the past five years. I have taught in various studios in the Bay Area and Chicagoland Area, as well as abroad in Mexico and Guatemala. I am also a certified GYROTONIC® instructor, a movement system with similarities to dance, Pilates, gymnastics, and Tai chi, and have taught private sessions for the past three years.
My teaching style is structured, warm, patient, passionate, and focused. I am very excited to be teaching on Outschool, and to be offering virtual classes in this setting. My classes are inclusive, meaning that students of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome.
Aside from dance, I enjoy spending time outside in nature, learning about plants, gardening, editing dance films, reading books, and cooking new things. I also have my TEFL certificate and enjoy helping people learn English, as I am attempting to learn Spanish.
Please feel free to reach out with questions, a different requested time, or if your learner needs any accommodations. I'm happy to work together to find a solution and ensure they get the most out of my classes. I hope to meet and dance with your children very soon!
