Class Experience

Students will be drawing a pumpkin with instruction and learning how to shade with graphite pencils and stumps. There are no pre-requisites to this class and students will be given direct instruction on how to draw as well as how to shade properly. We will be discussing the best way to set up still life sketching and breaking down the sketch into manageable sections in order to draw more effectively. There are many shading techniques but we will be focusing on smudging with pencil and blending tool.

Supply List
All students will need a HB, 2H, 4H or 6B pencil for shading and drawing as well as a piece of white paper (construction paper is best), and a stump or a cotton ball for blending. Other alternatives to the stump are Q-tip, piece of smooth fabric, tissue, toilet paper, or their finger. Stumps can be purchased as art supply retailers such as Hobby Lobby, Michaels or Joanns as well as Amazon.com.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi,
I am an art teacher but have many interests outside of art. I currently teach elementary and middle school art and art history. I love teaching technique as well as the stories behind artists. I believe anyone can be an artist. Many of my students have continued their art lessons even after middle school and love learning about new techniques and useful everyday lessons such as quick sketching, oil pastel technique, colored pencil techniques, pastel pencils, graphite, and creating collages. My art projects are usually centered around an artist and then a technique that the artist used to create their masterpieces.
