Well developed story worlds captivate us. They make us return again and again to that place where dragons can be ridden, light can be molded, or magic can be learned. In this class we will explore the elements of world building by diving into the world created by Shannon Messenger for her Keeper of the Lost Cities series, and Webtoon artist Purpah's world of Suitor Armor. Anyone who has written fan fiction or cos-played has already intrinsically picked up on many of the necessary elements...
I am a story lover, an avid reader, and a middle grade novelist. I have a BA in English with a concentration in creative writing.
Learners will need to familiarize themselves with the first book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, and read Suitor Armor on Webtoons. Keeper of the Lost Cities should be available at your local bookstore or library
3 hours 20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Some of the characters in Keeper of the Lost Cities are kidnapped and wind up in mortal peril. Suitor Armor is an Aurthuian style society full of knights with long swords living in a war-torn land. Some of the characters harm the peoples they're at war with.
