5 live meetings
3 hrs 45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this 5-day course we'll dive into the fields of STEM with inspiration from Fawn and the animal fairies. We'll explore different aspects of engineering, problem-solving, science, technology, and the design process as it relates to biology and animal adaptation. Classes are structured to provide a foundational understanding of new concepts through discussion, video, pictures, and sometimes short stories or poems. I encourage a lot of student-led discussion to help with articulating a hypothesis, describing results, explaining conclusions, and theorizing improvements. All classes include a hands-on element, whether a science experiment, art project, design day, or building and testing of a design. Most classes do not need parent assistance, however, you know your child and your own comfortable level best. A materials list for all four classes will be provided prior to the start of the first class. All optional printable are posted 5-7 days before class meets. If you don't have a printer, a notebook will do just fine. The Fawn class includes: Day 1: Explore biodiversity and the system of classification Day 2: Investigate how external structural form relates to function and habitat (skeleton vs invertebrate, webbed foot versus hoof) Day 3: Experiment with adaptations Day 4: Design and create an animal to live in a specific habitat Day 5: Share animal designs and play an adaptations game
Learning Goals
Students will:
1. Conduct experiments using the scientific method
2. Understand what engineering is and explore the engineering design process
3. Examine problems and create engineering solutions
4. Explore the field of biology focusing on classification and adaptations

Supply List
A complete supply list will be shared in the classroom. All supplies are generally items you might normally have at home such as: clothes pin, tweezer, spoon, sunflower seeds, raisins, marbles or similar, toothpicks, craft sticks, pipe cleaners, optional printables.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
