Fair Foods: Homemade Funnel Cake! (9-12)

Do you love going to a fair or carnival to get a delicious funnel cake treat? You won't need to go to those places anymore if you know how to make your own! During this one time class, students will create their own funnel cake batter, then fry it to golden perfection. Learners will be able to finish off their funnel cake with their favorite toppings. Ingredients: Makes about 2-3 funnel cakes ¼ cup milk 1 egg 1 tablespoon water ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon granulated sugar ¾ teaspoon baking powder 1 pinch salt ½ cup all purpose flour 4 Tablespoons powdered sugar Oil for frying (vegetable or canola) Optional: Any toppings you may enjoy on a funnel cake--cinnamon sugar, whipped toppings, caramel, hot fudge/chocolate syrup, sprinkles, fruit, etc Materials: 1 large mixing bowl with spout or medium sized mixing bowl (if using a mixing bowl with no spout, have a liquid measuring cup handy to pour the batter, can use the same one used to make the batter) 1 whisk 1 liquid measuring cup Teaspoon and Tablespoon Measuring spoons 1/2 Cup measuring cup Heat safe tongs Medium to large skillet for frying funnel cakes Wooden Spoon Paper Towels Rimmed Baking Sheet Cooling Rack Tasting plate and fork Optional: Apron, towel for wiping hands
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
During class we will be shallow frying funnel cakes and using a stove, some learners may require direct supervision depending on skillset and experience.
