Factoring Polynomials Completely - An Essential Algebra 1 Skill

In this one-time course, students will learn how to factor trinomials (polynomials with 3 terms, ie. 7x^2+32x-15) in which the leading coefficient is greater than one, as well as other polynomials; typically taught near the end of the second semester of Algebra 1. This class is a great follow-up to my Multiplying Polynomials with FOIL class.

Class Experience

This class can be a great review for students who are familiar with the FOIL method or have recently completed Algebra 1 and would like reinforcement, or a great refresher for those about to enter Algebra 2. For younger students who love math and are familiar with integer operations and greatest common factor, this could be a fun challenge for them! For those students, it would also be helpful if they were familiar with the FOIL method (see my other class listing).
Students will learn how to factor quadratic equations (trinomials) and other polynomials in a two-step learning process: 1) by way of examples led by the teacher. The teacher will first give examples and then 2) lead the group to work through problems. Problem-solving will be a collaborative effort between students and the teacher, working as a team. The teacher will have plenty of problems to work, and students are also welcome to bring problems, if they wish, for the group to solve.
My teaching style is very interactive, engaging, encouraging, and fun. We will factor completely. Factoring will include the GCF (Greatest Common Factor) factoring technique as well as by grouping and continues with students and teacher working together to factor polynomials completely. Finally, the teacher will give students the opportunity to solve problems on their own, and then go over the problem as a group. Time permitting, students may submit problems of their own for the group to solve.

Learning Goals

This one-time class will introduce students to completely factoring trinomials and other polynomials, an essential Algebra 1 advanced skill learned near the end of the school year Algebra 1 course. This class will reinforce learning of current Algebra 1 students who have successfully factored trinomials with leading coefficients of 1 (x^2+bx+c) and have begun factoring trinomials with leading coefficients greater than 1 (ax^2+bx+c). It can be a challenge for those who have never factored before. We will also factor by grouping and by greatest common factor.

Factoring polynomials completely is an essential Algebra 1 advanced skill that can be reinforced for current Algebra 1 students. As someone who has tutored 6th, 7th, 8th grade math, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-calculus, and Calculus, I have a wonderful, unique perspective because I know how valuable this skill is for not only Algebra 1, but beyond.
I am an industrial engineer who always wanted to be a math teacher. I had fun helping my kids with math homework while they were in school, and when they started college four years ago, I began tutoring math at our local middle school as well as tutoring privately (all grades). I love all math, especially algebra, and I make it fun for kids!
