Class Experience

Calling all Hamilton lovers! Hamilton the musical is a wonderful way to learn history, but not everything is true in the popular show. We will break down a few of the biggest changes that the musical makes from the original story. This flex class will dive into whether these changes impact the story and why Lin Manuel Miranda may have made the decision to diverge from the true story. 

This class is filled with the most fascinating facts about Alexander Hamilton and the Revolutionary War. We will study specific songs like "Alexander Hamilton", "Satisfied", and "What I'd Miss" and more. We will study about whether the depiction of major characters is fair including George Washington, Lafayettte, Aaron Burr, and Thomas Jefferson. The Thomas Jefferson character is a particular interesting debate since he is painted as a somewhat villainous character in the musical.  Was he in real life? 

This class is really fun and a great way for students to engage in a popular topic whiling learning so much about history. 

I will present a Canva slide presentation with pictures to share this information in a lecture style class. I record using loom so students will be able to see me and hear me as well as see the slides. The class will comprise of watching or listening to Hamilton songs and analyzing them. Students will engage in interactive assignments including discussions on whether the changes to Hamilton impacted the story. For an assignment, students will select one song to analyze for truth. They will also complete a similar assignment for a major character in the play. We will complete a discussion on the casting of Hamilton and it's impact on the story. Students will complete a trivia quiz to review things they have learned.

Weekly breakdown: 
Week One: Hamilton's and Aaron Burr's childhoods, analysis of  the songs "Alexander Hamilton" and "Aaron Burr, Sir" and "My Shot" , Lafayette, Hercules Mulligan, and John Laurens, Casting decision
Week Two:The Women of Hamilton, analysis of "Helpless", "Satisfied", "Schuyler Sisters", "Burn" Hamilton's children
Week Three: Federalist papers, The Truth about Duels, Phillip Hamilton,  George Washington and his cabinet 
Week Four: Thomas Jefferson, The election of 1800, Aaron burr, slavery, death and legacy

Learning Goals

Students will learn about Alexander Hamilton, the person, and the Revoluationary War. They will learn about many of the Founding Fathers.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will be listening to or analyzing songs which may be "PG-13'. We will not be using the original versions, but the edited versions used in Disney plus or other network broadcast. There are some words like "damn" in these songs, but the f-word is edited out.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Before my career in education, I worked as a newspaper reporter. I still love reading a daily newspaper, and I am very passionate about current events.
