Class Experience
Welcome to Face Painting! In this class, students will learn how to safely apply face paint designs, and how to create their own designs from photos. Classes will be delivered via recorded lecture videos every week. Students will upload their homework projects to Flipgrid, where they can give each other positive feedback and discuss their designs. Students will receive feedback from the instructor every week. Week 1: Basic Designs. This week, we will focus on the basics of face paint. We will be talking about how to properly apply face paint, clean brushes, and creating several common cheek designs. For their homework, students will choose two cheek designs from the video to paint (Bee, Baseball, Butterfly, Rainbow). Week 2: Fantasy Designs. This week, students will create a more elaborate design. Students will learn how to safely apply makeup around eyes. For their project, students will recreate one of the two designs from the video (Fire Mask or Fairy Mask). Week 3: Clown Face Design. For this week, students will learn about clown makeup, and how it evolved over the years. For their project, students will recreate a traditional, full-faced pantomime makeup from the class video. Week 4: Animal Face Design. During our final class, students will see different examples of full-faced animal face paint. Students will learn how to look at a photo of an animal, and pick the best traits to put into their video. Students will be asked to pick an animal of their choice and create a face paint design based off of it. **Students are not expected to have any face painting experience before this class. Students will be using Flipgrid to upload their projects, which requires a video submission.**
Learning Goals
Students will learn to safely apply different face paint designs, and how to create a face paint design from an animal.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will be doing a clown makeup in this class, it is a common fear with younger children.
Students MUST conduct an allergy test on themselves before beginning the course. To do so, students must do the following:
- Apply a small amount of your face paint to your inner elbow.
- Cover the product with a bandage for 20 minutes.
- Remove the bandage and paint. If there is irritation, you are having a reaction to the face paint, and I would not recommend taking this course.
Supply List
Students will need to buy a basic set of face paints for this class. Please make sure your face paint kit includes 10 or more basic colors (including black and white), a sponge, and at least one brush.
