I love fairy tales, but I love fractured fairy tales even more! In this fun, engaging 4 week class, we will delve into the whimsical world of fractured fairy tales. My teaching style is energetic and hands on! I love teaching children in an engaged, enthusiastic manner. Here is a break down of each week: Day 1: We will get to know each other by discussing fun aspects of fractured fairy tales. I will read students one of my favorite fractured fairy tales, "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" by Jon Scieszka. Then students will start prewriting their very own fractured fairy tale! At home, each student will be expected to work on creating a rough draft of her/his fairy tale before we meet again. Day 2: We will continue our discussion of fractured fairy tales, and I will share another favorite, "The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales" by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. We will then workshop each child's story, helping her/him to make changes in a very positive manner. At home, each student will be expected to continue working on her/his story. Day 3: This class will be similar to the last one, except the story that I share will be, "Cinderella's Rat" by Susan Meddaugh. After discussing the story, the students will have another opportunity to share their writing and get feedback on it. I will be sending each family easy, fun ways to publish writing, and the students will publish their work before our final day. Week 4: In our final class, we will celebrate! I will share the celebratory story, "The Little Red Hen (makes a pizza)" by Philemon Sturges and then the students will have the opportunity to share their finished story! They will each be celebrated as authors in this final class!
Learning Goals
Students will learn all about fractured fairy tales while also improving their writing, as they create a fairy tale of their own.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Lydia, and I love children and teaching! I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Muhlenberg College in 1995. At the same time, I received my Elementary Education certificate. I could not wait to teach! I began my career teaching middle school Spanish and then went on to teach 4th grade. My favorite subject to teach was always literature. I love children's literature! I stopped teaching in order to raise my four children (2 sets of twins!). I then went back to work as a children's librarian, which I loved. And now I am teaching at a play based Quaker preschool which is a delightful place to spend my mornings! I believe that learning should be fun and hands on. I feel that getting kids excited about a subject is how real learning takes place. Let's have fun learning together!
