Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
NOTE: This is USA Common Core State Standard (CCSS) Grade 5 level of math.

First, we will start off with a 5 minute ice breaker.

Next, we will review two quick reference charts created by Miss Linda to go over common fractions in a visual demonstration and common fractions converted to decimals.

After review of some terms to ensure all students have base knowledge of fractions, Miss Linda will introduce and demonstrate how to use the Bow Tie and Butterfly approaches to solve addition problems for fractions with unlike denominators (e.g., 1/2 + 3/4). The demonstration will include how to interpret proper and improper fraction solutions (e.g. 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6 proper or 1.25 or 1 1/4; 1/2 + 3/4 = 10/8 improper or 0.833).
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to solve an addition math problem that has two fractions with unlike denominators (e.g 1/2 + 3/4).

“Kahoot! is a global learning platform company. Kahoot! games can be played anywhere, in person or virtually, using any device with an internet connection.” A Kahoot! game is a quiz with multiple choice answers and the games include topics such as Year End Math Assessment. Kahoot! is a fun way to test a student's knowledge of a math topic such as adding fractions, multiplying decimals, solving for area of a rectangle. Kahoot! app is free and does not require an account. The teacher provides the website link (http://www.kahoot.it) and a game pin then the student creates a silly screen name; thus, no account is needed, and no personal information is given to Kahoot! “Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computing, history, art history, economics, and more, including K-14 and test preparation (SAT, Praxis, LSAT) content. We focus on skill mastery to help learners establish strong foundations, so there's no limit to what they can learn next!” Khan Academy is also a free app and for this class will not require an account. The teacher will share screen of quiz questions, so no account is needed, and no personal information is given to Khan Academy. "At IXL Learning, we are passionate about improving learning for all.
