US Grade 4 - 6
NOTE: This is USA Common Core State Standard (CCSS) Grade 5 level of math. First, we will start off with a 5 minute ice breaker. Next, we will review two quick reference charts created by Miss Linda to go over common fractions in a visual demonstration and common fractions converted to decimals. After review of some terms to ensure all students have base knowledge of fractions, Miss Linda will introduce and demonstrate how to use the Bow Tie and Butterfly approaches to solve addition problems for fractions with unlike denominators (e.g., 1/2 + 3/4). The demonstration will include how to interpret proper and improper fraction solutions (e.g. 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6 proper or 1.25 or 1 1/4; 1/2 + 3/4 = 10/8 improper or 0.833).
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to solve an addition math problem that has two fractions with unlike denominators (e.g 1/2 + 3/4).
