Class Experience

Students will learn how to outline and write a 5-paragraph expository essay going through the steps in any process, or leading to any event, using a super easy writing formula. We will discuss how to narrow down a specific process or series of steps or events suitable for this style of essay, how to outline the essay, and finally, how to quickly write a grade-A essay by simply expanding upon the outline. We will then practice using this writing formula as a class!

The 5-paragraph expository essay is the most common type of essay assigned for both standardized and class subject matter tests, and students are expected to write an informative, well-organized essay within the time allotted for the test. Process essays are a form of expository essay frequently expected of test takers as well as students of any field. For example, a character- or plot-based literary analysis may be written as a process essay, and scientific essays explore the steps in an experiment or a process quite often. The formulaic approach to expository writing that I teach is a valuable skill that students will be able to apply for the rest of their educational careers, throughout high school and college (and beyond!).

While we will not have time in class for students to write an essay, learners who would like to follow along and outline an essay as we go will leave class with a full outline, and they will know how to turn their outlines into finished 5-paragraph essays! If you're looking for an essay writing practice session with personalized essay feedback for your learner, please see this class: https://outschool.com/classes/expository-essay-timed-5-paragraph-essay-writing-practice-session-with-feedback-FdaKQ3ye?usid=6IGYSPMi&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

Learners will get the most out of this 1-hour class if they come prepared with information about a process or event they understand well enough to write about, but those who are simply exploring cause and effect writing are also more than welcome!

Learning Goals

Students will learn a simple formula to quickly and easily write a logically organized 5-paragraph essay that explains a process or sequence step by step. We will practice using this formula as a class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am so happy to be here and for the opportunity to teach your child(ren) all about the fascinating world that exists within the English language! I have bachelor's degrees in both psychology and English, with a focus on writing, as well as my TEFL certification.

I am also a Yoga Alliance-certified, trauma-informed yoga instructor. I fell in love with yoga somewhere in the middle of my more than 100-pound weight loss, and it truly and completely changed my life—not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. I am a health and wellness enthusiast!

I have been working with youth since I was in middle school, starting with babysitting and tutoring. I started formally teaching as part of one of the many leadership programs I completed in college, and I began teaching online in 2019.

In addition to teaching, I write technical and training documentation for various organizations (and develop and teach training courses), and I write creatively for fun as well! I am actually in the process of getting my first children's storybook submission ready, and I previously worked with my favorite author to write a pilot tv script for a potential adaptation of her lengthy urban fantasy series. I am currently working on my first fantasy novel in what I hope will be a book series.

I also offer private tutoring in writing (creative, scientific, and academic), reading, English, literature, psychology, and English as a Second Language, as well as private yoga instruction or yoga group parties.
