Class Experience

Strawberry shortcake...that's it...nothing more to type but I will. In this bake along session (all measuring takes place during session) you will bake an American classic and learn how to make a single serving (p.s. we will bake more) because sometimes you only want the sweet treat once or twice and not have 89 treats lingering around. While you'll be creating this with strawberries, you can and it's strongly encouraged to try with peaches, blueberries and other fruit (hint hint hint: pear, ginger & honey compote). Also, who doesn't love an opportunity to play with their food, during this session you get the chance using the technique "cutting" i.e. pressing a fat into flour. When we're finished you'll do a 30 second review, that's where you begin to explore your taste buds focusing on many components of food (i.e. smell, taste & texture).  Grab your ingredients so we can be about 30 minutes away from enjoying a sweet treat.

Supply List
The first measurements make 2 shortcakes and the second measurements make 4 shortcakes:

Shortcakes
1/2 cup-1 cup Flour
2 tsp- 4 tsp Sugar (divided) 
1/4 tsp Baking Powder
2-4 Tbsp Butter (cold, cubed)
1/4 cup-1/2 cup Milk
1/2 tsp - 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Pinch of Salt
4-6 Strawberries (Fresh)

Whipping Cream
1/2 cup -1 cup Heavy Whipping Cream (Keep cold)
3 Tbsp- 6 Tbsp Powder Sugar
1 tsp - 2 tsp Vanilla Extract 

Bowls 
Knife (Butter Knife works great)
Spoons
Fork
Whisk or Handheld Electric Mixer
Spatula
Cookie Sheet (also know as Baking Sheet) 
Parchment Paper or Aluminium Foil

Chello! This is where I’m suppose to introduce myself, so let’s begin. It’s Saturday morning and I’m rushing to beat my three sisters to get to the T.V., first. The rule in our home was whoever turned on the T.V. first controls what is watched.  I turn on the T.V. and I heard “ I gha-rawn-tee” a catch phrase uttered by Justin Wilson, one I came to look forward to every Saturday morning. This is one of the top memories I recall when I share my origin story of my culinary journey. The story continues with me smiling as I tell you how we had every bowl, whisk, spatula and measuring cups because I insisted to my parents we needed them.  

Naturally you may expect to read I went to culinary school and worked in the industry ‘X’ years but there was quite a detour on this journey. The journey consisted of many professions and one I was the most surprised by, an educator/instructor?!?  The journey as an educator is a story for another time, I’m here continuing my culinary journey but let me say I love being an educator.  So how did my culinary journey resume from the detour? Great question! The summer of 2017 I stated (to myself, no one was around) “The next job I take has to be in the culinary industry.” Fast forward to a Wednesday in September 2017, while working a school event, I meet the owner of a cooking school for children and that Saturday I was working for the cooking school. And the journey has continued from there and now we are here.  

With all this being said ('twas a lot) I look forward to cooking with you in “First We Cook, Then We Learn”, connecting children with the food they eat & develop a life skill, because we gotta eat!
