Exploring Yoga-Yoga 101

In this 8 week course we will explore what yoga is, breakdown foundational yoga poses, introduce breathing techniques and why they are important and build into mindfulness techniques.

Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Each week we will cover a different aspect of the yoga practice including breaking down basic yoga poses.  Each week will build on to each other culminating in a whole practice at the end of the course.  There will be 2x55min classes per week for 8 weeks.  

Each class will start with a warm up with Sun Salutations A & B and then we will talk about that particular weeks theme and then get into breaking down the assigned poses.  At the end of class there will be time for the students to discuss their experience after resting pose.  

As a teacher, I teach with modifications and variations so each student can be successful and find an appropriate expression of a pose for their body.  I highly encourage relevant questions during class.

Week 1: What is Yoga & Yoga History-Sun Salutation A & B
Week 2: Why is The Breath Important? -Standing Poses
Week 3: One Pointed Focus-Drishti -Standing/Balancing Poses
Week 4: Observation And Awareness- Seated Poses 
Week 5: Being Curious- Arm balances
Week 6: Taking it Down to The Mat-Floor poses
Week 7: Cooling it Down-Floor poses
Week 8: Why Resting is Important/Putting it All Together

Lesson 1:
What is Yoga?
 We will define what yoga means and how it applies to modern life.  We will also be practicing Sun Salutations A & B today

Quick History of Yoga
 We'll have a quick history lesson on yoga and then work on breaking down Sun Salutation A & B sequences.

Lesson 3:
Why is The Breath Important? Part 1
 We will talk about breathing and how it effects our nervous system and why we intentionally use it in yoga.  We will begin breaking down standing poses

Lesson 4:
Why is The Breath Important? Part 2
 We will continue to work with breathing techniques for the physical yoga practice and how to use it to work through the sensations experienced in the yoga poses.  Continue standing poses

Other Details

Learning Needs
Yoga is available to all capabilities and all are welcome. For learners that need assistance with holding attention or need physical assistance please help your student as needed throughout class. I will provide modifications as needed.
Parental Guidance
Please make sure your student has enough space that is clear of any hazards. Water bottle is suggested.

Yoga mat or a non slip surface

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an ERYT 500(experienced registered yoga teacher) and have been teaching since 2008.  I have worked with various age groups over the years including youth (studio and daycare settings and high school football teams).  I have 4 of my own children that I teach yoga to (both physical practice and philosophy).
