Sometimes referred to as the ‘lungs’ of the Earth, the Amazon Rainforest is an incredible place filled to the brim with millions of diverse species. In this multi-day class, students will learn about different flora and fauna that call the Amazon Rainforest home while learning about different aspects of ecology.

Some of the species we’ll learn about include:

1) Carnivorous Plants
2) Tarantulas
3) Piranhas
4) Poison Dart Frogs
5) Harpy Eagles
6) Squirrel Monkeys

…and many more!

In addition, we will touch on layers of the rainforest, biodiversity, and threats the Amazon rainforest is facing.

Classes At-A-Glance:

Class One
• Introduction to the Amazon Rainforest
• Carnivorous Plants
• Two Arthropods of the Amazon Rainforest

Class Two
• Differences Between Reptiles and Amphibians
• Three Reptiles/Amphibians of the Amazon Rainforest

Class Three
• The Amazon River
• Three Aquatic Animals of the Amazon Rainforest

Class Four
• Biodiversity and Species Richness
• Three Birds of the Amazon Rainforest

Class Five
• Four Mammals of the Amazon Rainforest

Class Six **This class may be shorter than usual if no students choose to complete the presentation**
• Threats and Conservation of the Amazon Rainforest
• Cumulative Trivia
• Learner Presentations (Optional)

There is no mandatory homework, but students are encouraged to write about their favourite learned species in the form of a paragraph, poster, or presentation. I will provide an outline for this task after the second class and would be happy to look at the finished product and assess it if the parent (or learner) would like. While it is up to the learner and parent if the task is completed, it is strongly encouraged. Time in the sixth class will be set aside for students to present their task if they feel comfortable doing so.

Optional handouts and questions to promote information retention will also be provided for each class.

This class will be more of a lecture style (yet interactive) class with a PowerPoint, photos, videos, and fascinating facts. We will have conversations about these creatures (including where they live, what they eat, and different behaviours) and students are encouraged to ask questions and discuss (although are also welcome to just absorb the information if they prefer).
