Exploring quadratics investigates solving quadratics, graphing quadratic equations and real world applications. The lessons begin by identifying and defining a quadratic equation. Two methods to solve a quadratic equation, factoring and the quadratic formula, are explained with step by step illustrations. Next, a graphing activity creates the visual representation of the quadratic equation. Real world problems are formulated and solved using the the methods learned. The lessons end with the learners creating a mind map of quadratics to visually summarize the concepts and relationships. Each lesson begins with an opening activity to prepare for the topic in the lesson Questions on the homework from the previous lesson will be discussed, if requested. An activity or interactive discussion is used to explain the concept of the week. Example problems follow and are illustrated with step by step instructions. Finally, learners work in pairs or individually to apply the methods and strategies in the lesson. Learners are encouraged to share their solutions and workings for these exercises with the group. The lesson ends with an assessment activity, for example a fun true false task, to check understanding. Week One Solving quadratic equations by factoring Week Two Solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula Week Three Graphing quadratic equations Week Four Real world applications with quadratics The lessons use slides for visual support, discussions, and activities. Pre-Algebra or a similar course is a prerequisite. Learners may enroll who are currently taking a Pre-Algebra course.
