Description

Class Experience

Learners will build speaking and listening skills, engaging in guided conversation around a high-interest topic. Learners will practice answering text-based questions, citing text evidence, summarizing information, and identifying main idea and details.
As a student-centered educator, I strived for a classroom driven by student voice and focused on the whole child. I believe in the power of literature to connect and nurture understanding of other people and the world around us. Research has shown that reading helps develop necessary empathy and social awareness in people of all ages. When our discussions bring up sensitive issues or strong opinions, I lean on my years of experience with students age 11-15 as learners to help navigate those discussions and support students in expressing their own views while listening compassionately to the views of others.
Students have the option to read the full article excerpted in class and complete a reading quiz. These materials are posted in the classroom after class meets. Students who complete the after-class activities will receive graded feedback from the teacher.
Students will be provided a link to enroll in Ms. D's NewsELA class upon enrollment. To participate, learners will need to be able to open an extra web browser window and access NearPod during class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • NewsELA.com
  • NearPod
The teacher uses student work in class and on quizzes to assess learning. A written report can be requested by the parent after one month enrolled in the ongoing meetings.
45 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
News topics will tie to student areas of interests and may sometimes cover sensitive topics such as politics, race, and other identity issues. All texts will be presented in an age-appropriate manner and the teacher will rely on her years of working with teenaged learners to navigate any sensitivities that arise. At parent request, a link to the source articles for upcoming classes can be provided to help parents of prospective and current learners determine the suitability of the class.
NewsELA takes authentic texts from a wide range of reputable sources, including but not limited to:
-The Washington Post
The Chicago Tribune
-The New York Times
-Time magazine
-The LA Times
-Associated Press
-Scientific American
-Atlas Obscura
-NPR
-The Marshall Project
-Texas Monthly
