Science & Nature

In Part 3 of this full-year course, students spend 9 weeks learning about evolution and the web of life.  Uses REAL Science Odyssey as a base. No pre-requisite.

Students learn how evolution is caused by tiny little changes over long periods of time. The also learn that we evolved from common ancestors from long ago.

Students explore the question: Where can you find whales in a desert?  They discover how fossils tell us about animals in the past.  Then they'll make their own fossils out of chocolate! 

Animals Through Time

Students learn what paleontologists do and how they keep records of what they find.  Then they practice using cookies to "excavate."

Paleontology

 Students explore the question: How do we know what dinosaurs looked like?  They compare traits of dinosaur fossils with traits of modern animals, making connections between the two. 

Fossil Evidence

Students explore plant traits and use them to identify a mysterious fruit.  They learn how identifying traits can help scientists learn more about unknown plants.  

Comparing Traits

Using a drawing exercise, we explore the traits of dogs. Then they explore how humans have modified animals, and then determine what kind of pigeons two given adult pigeons would produce. 

Artificial Selection

Students explore selection in the real world. Then they investigate white-tail deer traits, and how these traits may have benefited them over time.   

Natural Selection

Students learn about Darwin by reading the story "One Beetle Too Many." Then they investigate the different types of beaks that birds have.  Using tools to represent each type of beak, they try picking up different kinds of bird food.

Students learn how social animals have evolved to communicate with each other.  They practice being a naturalist by observing animals in the wild in videos.   

Be a Naturalist

Students explore the idea of future human evolution by investigating what has happened to astronauts' bodies who have lived in space for a year.  

Human Evolution

Students learn what an ecosystem is and think about how humans could create an ecosystem.  They will research their own ecosystem in a local area and analyze how different organisms interact with their environment. 

Ecosystems

Students investigate how animals interact with each other as predator and prey.  They will look at animal interactions in a local ecosystem, as well as, analyze a predator-prey relationships.

The Web of Life

Students look at how plants interact with their environment by observing seeds and figuring out how they get around to reproduce. 

How Seeds Get Around

Students explore how fungi helps decompose matter and creates soil.  They then set up a mold experiment to watch matter decompose. 

Decomposition & Matter

Student explore the role that worms play in decomposition, and then observe real worms as they do their work. 

Worms and Dirt

Students examine how plants, animals, and decomposers all work together in an ecosystem.  Students use this knowledge to design an ecosystem for a sunfish. 

Working Together

Students learn how biodiversity makes an ecosystem healthy.
Then they create a dinosaur food web to follow the flow of energy through the food web.  They see if they can figure out why dinosaurs went extinct after the asteroid, and why other animals survived.

Unbalanced Ecosystems

Students share the results of their mold and worm experiments. 

Experiment Presentations

Using their knowledge of ecosystems and how organisms interact, they invent a way to grow food on Mars.

Students present their arguments on the Mars food system and work on ways to improve it.
