3 in-class hoursClass Experience
This will be a small group class, handouts will be provided before we start, and highlighted on the share screen during the instruction. Questions and discussions will be encouraged throughout the course. At the beginning of every class we will review what was covered in previous lessons, and every effort will be made to make sure all learners are included and not left out. In the first (2) weeks we will cover such basics as - •Parts of the guitar and their function •Holding the guitar for comfort, and play ability •Tuning the guitar, and electronic devices that will help •Using the plectrum (pick), versus fingerpicking •Understanding the tablature system of note reading •Simple 3–4 note riffs, and arpeggio patterns The next (3) - (5) weeks we move into - •The simple open power cords •The basic open triads, major, minor, and (4) note dominant seventh •We learn the basic grouping of cords in common guitar keys •Strum and picking patterns-straight eights versus swinging eights •Developing a doable, and enjoyable practice schedule Weeks (6), and (7), are for exploring - •Making power cords sound more powerful, through palming and overdrive. •More complex arpeggio patterns, and riffs •The 12 bar blues progression, using open, and barre chords •Scales for popular modalities used in acoustic, and metal rock: major, minor, minor pentatonic, harmonic minor •Keeping time, biologic vs. mechanical Week (8) Is review and feedback time - •How does all this fit together? •Question time for any areas there might be uncertainty about •Where do students go from here, What can they expect if they want to play guitar in a middle/ high school ensemble Note - everything I teach in this class is consistent with playing a guitar, or any other instrument in an academic setting, or a garage band!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching school-age children, to senior citizens for the last 20 years. Prior to that I played lead guitar in a country rock band playing the LA scene and touring in Arizona. Along the way while I gained practical music making experience, I have also studied privately and in classes, culminating with a degree from UCLA in (ethnomusicology) world music in 2003.
For the last 20 years I have also been teaching for local city recreation departments, as well as school districts. I have a current California substitute teacher Credential, in fact starting last year I was teaching one of the first in-person public school classes in California, a 3rd through 5th grade ukulele/xylophone/ percussion class at a local elementary school.
