US Grade 4 - 5
P.E.M.D.A.S. - Parentheses, EXPONENTS, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. This one time class will focus on the "E" in PEMDAS. We will take a deep dive into exponents, exploring what they are, how they work, and why they impact equations in the way that they do. Learners will have the opportunity to use both visuals and hands on materials to deepen their conceptual understanding of exponents as together we build new skills and work toward mastery of this intriguing mathematical concept. Please Note: Due to the pace of this class, learners should be fluent in math facts to 12. (addition/subtraction/multiplication/division)
Learning Goals
At the end of this one time class, learners will be able to answer the question:
1. What is an exponent?
2. How can "square" and and "cubed" numbers be represented visually and physically?
3. How do I solve an equation involving exponents?
4. How do exponents fit into the PEMDAS model?

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a former Math/Science teacher I have spent countless hours helping elementary school aged children discover the wonder of learning. I was privileged to begin my career in the world of Special Education, taught many years in the general education setting, and ended my career in Gifted Education. My ESL certification allowed me the honor of also working with countless children who were just learning English as their second language and what a joy it was to introduce them to my native language.
Helping students discover their talents, passions, and strengths is one of the things that brings me the greatest fulfillment in life. Encouraging each child to find a way to plug those talents into his or her learning is a vital part of who I am. My work as a Gifted and Talented Specialist taught me the importance of inspiring children to look beyond the obvious to the abstract and helped me to see the joy that comes from viewing every child through the lens of his or her strengths. My hope is that, through my teaching, I can help each child to see himself, or herself, through that lens as well.
