Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
This short class will help students explore the concept of area. Through discussion, exploration, and the use of an interactive slide show, learners will discover (or be reminded of) the definition of area and then the formula for finding area.

Students should have been exposed to the concept, and should have a sense of multiplication. It would also be beneficial if the students have some building bricks they can work and a baseplate to build on. The bricks aren't required, but they do make the lessons more hands on. Another option for learners would be to have paper and pencil to draw their constructions.

This is a short, workshop type class, so there will be no homework assigned.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of area.
Students will use multiplication or repeat addition to find area.
Students will use their knowledge of area and their multiplication skills to construct structures with specific area calculations.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm offering this class, because as a Math Tutor, I find that this is a concept that gets lost for students. I have 5th and 6th graders who should be working on volume and surface area, who never mastered the basic concepts of area and perimeter. I want to help bridge that gap before it becomes a real problem for learners!
