What's included

Homework
1 hour per week. For each class/state, there will be 3-5 homework options given. These could be to watch a film, write a short 2-3 paragraph paper, or create something. All homework assignments will be due on Sunday of each week. If there are more than 2 learners enrolled in the class, there will be a group project to create something (video, poster, pamphlet) marketing travel to the state.

US Grade 4 - 6
In this class we will take a look at the history of Washington state: Who settled it? When and how did it join the Union? What important events happened there and who came from there? What is it most known for today? What makes it unique?


Week 1 - A look at the geography of Washington State and how it affected settlement
Week 2 - Indigenous history - History of the Principal Tribes of Washington State; Early Euro-American exploration and settlement
Week 3 - American-British occupation; Fur Trade; 49th Parallel; Statehood; Development of the state in population centers and industry; Mount St. Helens Eruption
Week 4 - Pop Culture; Starbucks; Music Scene of early 1990's (Grunge); Trivia


Each week, by Wednesday evening (9pm PST) -

-I will email each student a link that weeks lecture and assignments. This will be on YouTube and is in a private account that is embedded into the Outschool classroom page.  
-  Assignments will consist of discussion and essay questions, short research topics, Youtube videos, and worksheets. These will be posted on the classroom page. 
- In my flex classes, each family can determine the level of participation in the course. 
- Communication will be done through the Outschool classroom.  
-I will check in with each student several times during the week to check on progress of the homework, address any questions, or to engage in a discussion about the topic covered. Each student is encouraged to message (through the Outschool classroom) me anytime they have any questions or thoughts about the class.  
- Each week, there may be additional articles, videos, or pictures that will be posted to the classroom page to engage students in open conversations about that weeks topic.

Learning Goals

In this class, students will learn more than just the state population, motto, and flower. They will learn about the different groups of people that helped the state grow, how it participated in conflicts and battles, different landmarks, food, music, and culture.

Parental Guidance
We will be discussing treatment of Native Americans and African Americans throughout American history. All discussions will be handled in an age appropriate manner. This class uses Youtube videos embedded into the Outschool classroom to share class lectures.

I have been an educator on Outschool since February of 2018. I have my MBA and MHA, both of which have taught me the value of conducting research and asking questions.  I have a passion for history, organization, reading, and learning. You can usually find me in the middle of 2-3 books or watching a documentary.

I am also an Outschool ACE Educator, which means that I continually seek out ways to improve my teaching skills and knowledge, as well as the learner experience.
