Class Experience

Let's explore the world together!
Each day, I will read books that introduce kids to diverse groups of people and cultures. You will hear books about life in Kenya, musicians in Mexico, Navajo folktales, constellation myths from around the world & more! We will find places on the map, look at images of landscapes and wildlife and other amazing sights. We will try to see through the eyes of others and gain a greater appreciation for all of the diverse people and places of the world.

Week 1- Africa: Chirchir is Singing (Kenyan), The First Bear In Africa
Week 2 - Mexico: Off We Go To Mexico, Miguel & The Grand Harmony
Week 3 - India: Elephant Dance: A Journey to India, Grandma & the Great Gourd
Week 4 - Peru: Moon Rope, Star Stories: The Llama Star
Week 5 - Japan: The Beckoning Cat, The Way We Do It In Japan, I Live In Tokyo
Week 6 - Native American (Navajo): The Girl Who Loved Horses, Star Stories: How Coyote Scattered The Stars
Week 7 - Middle East: Sitti's Secrets, The Three Princes
Week 8 - Tibet: Tibetan Tales For Little Buddhas
Week 9 - Liberia: Anansi & the Magic Stick
Week 10 - South America (Amazon Rain Forest): Jungle Days, Jungle Nights
Week 11 - Bengal (Bangladesh & E. India): The Ghost Catcher
Week 12 - Brazil (with African connection): How Night Came From the Sea

Before each story, there will be a brief introduction to the place/people we are learning about that day.
Afterwards, we will dive in a little deeper by doing things like:
* Hearing some interesting facts relating to customs, traditions or cultural history
* Learning a few words in new languages
* Having class discussion time to ask questions or share our own experiences that relate to what we are learning

Learning Goals

Students will learn about people and places from all over the world, including cultures that might be hidden or underrepresented in their own communities. Topics will vary from week to week depending on the book read aloud, but include lessons in languages, geography, music and history.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching for over 20 years, and have also been an audiobook narrator for hundreds of books. As someone who has lived abroad and considers herself to be a World Citizen, I have learned that there are so many important things we can learn when we get outside of ourselves and try to see through the eyes of someone else.
