Description

Class Experience

Students will learn about various primates, big cats, birds, other mammals, and reptiles from all over the world. They will learn about them in the context of in a zoo and in the wild. Students will learn the basics of what it takes to care for animals in the zoo and the importance of zoos for wild animals and the environment.
I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology where I studied zoology, ecology, and animal behavior, among other things. I have worked as a zoo keeper with animals including elephants, lions, giraffes, flamingos, siamangs, lemurs, tortoises, snakes, monkeys, orangutans, amur leopards, and red pandas. I have been a zoo camp instructor as well as an animal, science, and environment educator at Walt Disney World.
There will be two optional take home assignments that may be started at the end of class (depending on active the students are in class discussions and activities) and then discussed at the beginning of the next class. They will be fun assignments that are not required but encouraged to check comprehension and extend what we learned that day. I will provide the worksheet for each assignment. The activities/assignments will take as long as the learner wants to spend on them (one is creative, and one is observation based).
 3 files available upon enrollment
I will provide 3 worksheets (Class 1, 2, and 4) that can be printed at home or the student can use there own piece of paper and something to write and/or color with. For class 4 we will need a cup, small items found around the house (small enough to fit several in the cup), tape, Joey worksheet (provided for download and print), and at least 3 peanuts/jelly bean sized items.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will assess how each student is progressing with discussion, games, activities, and optional assignments. These assessments will also help me gauge interest/knowledge level in different areas and therefore help me adapt the class to suite the learners needs.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will discuss family groups, the life cycle of a kangaroo, mother baby relationships, and how some animals attract each other. Also we will discuss animal's diet, some of which hunt or eat dead animals. We will also touch on endangered animals from with perspective that there are not many left in the wild. We will also touch on on conservation in a way that empowers younger learners to do things that they would be able to do at home rather than focusing on big world issues. All of these topics will be taught in a way that has been approved for zoo education for this age range.
